Is It Possible to See Sound?

A schlieren imaging system allows one to see things that are normally invisible.  An example is shown in this image, which shows a carbon dioxide vortex ring (and its mirror image).  In this presentation, Professor Jackson will describe the details of an off-axis single-mirror schlieren imaging system and discuss several experiments that reveal spectacular fluid motion that’s normally hidden from view.  By incorporating a strobed light source, such a schlieren system can even be used to visualize a standing wave oscillating in super slow motion.
